Human value is viewed as being highly valuable and should not be taken away under any circumstances, legal or otherwise. It is believed that not even the worst form of crime should deprive one his life. Those against capital punishment believe that the value of the criminal’s life should not be destroyed by their crime even if they killed someone. They argue that a substitute of this form of punishment can be through life imprisonment which gives the offender a chance to turn over a new leaf and lead a better life. In summary, human life is valuable and no authority should take it a away and no crime warrants for capital punishment. Capital punishment violates the due process of law in several ways. First, the imposition is arbitrary and irrevocable. This denies the offender the opportunity to benefit from reversal of a conviction or discovery of any new evidence wh ich might reverses the verdict. Additionally, the death penalty violates the Constitution's provision of equal protection of its citizens3. It was observed to be imposed randomly and with biases based on one’s skin color, social status and ethnicity. This shows that the death penalty does not conform to the due process of the law. The death penalty violatebiasesst important universal human right which is the right to live. This right should be respected at all times regardless of the form of crime that an individual has committed. This argument is similar to the one concerning the value of human life. This argument supports the point that a victim could kill their attacker in the process of a murderous attack. In such a case, the victim can be argued to have committed murder in self defense. In conclusion, killing does not correct the act committed by the offender, instead their natural worthiness is taken away. Moreover, it does not bring any form of retributive justice in s ociety. Capital punishment results to the wastage of limited resources that could have been directed to other meaningful activities in fighting crime3. In addition to, it is time consuming and wasted the energy of prosecutors, defense counsel, prosecuting attorneys and the legal enforcement personnel. It burdens the criminal justice system and has negative effects of societal values and morals. It goes ahead to prove that killing is right which is not true. There are higher chances of execution of the innocent as offenders may get killed due to the loopholes in the justice system. Jurors and prosecutors make mistakes and in the event an offender is innocent, they are killed for a crime that they did not commit which is highly regrettable. This together with the mistakes in the legal system can lead to death of innocent people where capital punishment is practicable3 . There is ample evidence for such situations leading to the conclusion that capital punishment should be abolished to avoid the loss of innocent lives.

In the majority of countries throughout the world speak English as their second or first language, no longer just America or England. English has taken many forms, American English, the Queens English, Australian, Canadian English, and several others. Even American English has taken several types of English, Jersey English, East Coast English, West Coast English, Southern English, slang English, and Ebonics. All of these languages have major variants between them, but are all of them are still understood aboard. Without English the world couldnt operate, because there would be no one language that could be understands all over the world. Due to cultural and economic backgrounds English is slightly different in each area, therefore there no one exact English. American English is the most common and broad type of English. American English spreads widely throughout the world, because of the wide spread traveling that many American dos. American English itself breaks apart into almost fifty types of spoken English. Each type of spoken American English is changed depending on the type of music that area listens to, the life styles they live, and the background of that area. For example, southerners speak faster and more rapidly then most Idahodians do. As A result of this, many southerners slur their words together so that they can speak faster, creating such words as Yall, yunkto, and yesum. Yall is the two word you and all slurred together. Yunkto is three words slammed together. These words are you, want and to. It would be used in a sentence such as, Yall yunkto go to dinner? Meaning, do you all want to go to dinner? And yesum is a combination of yes and maam. All though, these words vary from what many other regions would use, most of other areas of English speaking people would understand what this person would have been saying. This difference between American English and the Queens (British) English is much more dramatic. Where American English vary in itself is just slurs, contractions, and different pronunciation of word, the difference between American and the Queens English is by entire words. British English would use words like Bobby, flat, petrol, and lorry. Bobby is what the British call the police. Flat is their homes or apartments; petrol is the British word for gasoline. In addition, lorry is their word for a truck. While their words are greatly differently then American words people from both countries would understand what the other was saying. While many of these of the types of English vary as much as American and British English, it is still understood around the world. Without there being English many of the Presidents, dictators, tyrants, and terrorist couldnt understand each other. At all of their meeting there would have to be someone that spoke all of the languages that the members of the meeting spoke, or several translators which would make the it even more difficult. Also, with all the types of ethnic groups that are in America, there was to be one common language that everybody can understand. If America didnt speak English, everybody in America, and around the world, would have to find one common language for the entire world to learn to speak. English was merely the easiest for everybody to pick up. English can be traced back as far as the early 1100s B.C. The Anglo-Saxons in England spread their language as many different enemies tried to take over England, but failed. They would force their prisoners to learn their language, and inter-grade themselves into society. The language grew even more steadily as the criminals of England were being sailed all the way around the world to Australia. The criminals would be dropped off there and forced to learn to survive on their own. With an increasingly large number of criminals being put on this vacant island, they learned and continued to speak English. As technology and other advances were made, these former English citizens left the island and visited the other Asian countries; they spread English to more people and areas. This was also just the beginning of the spread of English throughout the world. The major spread of English happened during World War I and World War II. After several years of fighting during World War I Germany finally decided to surrender. After they surrendered both Americans and British soldiers put to into Germany to help rebuild it as it paid the British and American debt from the war. Inter-grading English speaking citizens in with the Germans made it possible for Germans to pickup and accept more English words into their vocabulary. Next, after World War II Americans were put into more countries that didnt speak English. For example, American soldiers were put into Japan for six years after the war to help reconstruct the cities from the damage that the atomic bomb caused. With Japanese being forced to work so closely with Americans, they, as well as the Germans did, learned words and the language that the American reconstructors were using. With the Japanese and Germans picking up some of our language, they would have never understood half of what we were telling them. While they may have picked up some of what we were saying through osmosis, there wouldnt have been anyway for the citizens of two different nations to understand each other. English was also being took back to Japan by the Japanese that came to America and wrote they families and visited them back in Japan. While English has taken many forms and shapes, it is the most important language still in use. Without English, the world couldnt operate properly.

Chapter 29: Harvey comes and talks about how his brother William broke his arm and how the baggage got lost in a town above here. The king is trying to take the blame off himself by saying what a coincidence it was that both of those things happened to him before he arrived here. A lot of people were on the side of the King instead of the real people. Some people were against the king in which includes the doctor of course and a lawyer named Levi Bell. The lawyer attempts to question him about himself and how he arrived to the town and all that stuff. The Doctor goes in his defense and says that if these two aren’t frauds, he the doctor himself is an idiot. They will bring the King and the Dauphin to the real couple and see what is going on. They go to a hotel with the new couple. The doctor accuses them of being frauds that have complices or assistants that they do not know about. He states that if there were complices, then the fakes would have gotten away with the bad of mo ney that Peter Wilks left. Now the king tells the story of how he had the money that the niece (Mary) gave to her to invest and hid it under the bed and follows what Huck tells him and says that the niggers stole and got away with it. One person questions Huck about the money and he tells exactly what he told the King that the niggers stole the money and he didn’t witness it happen or run away from the room. Now the lawyer is testing for handwriting and signatures to determine more evidence. After the two couples have written the two lines and signed it, the lawyer compared and the guilty victims were very obvious. Now the king is still defending himself saying it wasn’t a fair test and saying that the Duke is playing a joke about the handwriting. Now he gets... ...e run to freedom. The letter he writes it that Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville and Mr Phelps got him and will sell him for the reward. Huck then thinks about all the good times he had with Jim and how he was Jim’s only friend. Now Huck wants to get Jim out of slavery. Huck gathers a canoe and rides until he found a mill with the sigh â€Å"Phelps sawmill† Huck sinks the canoe to where can find it again. He then sees the duke holding up the bill for the Royal Noneuch-3 night performance- like that other time. Soon later Huck finds out that the raft is gone. His only property and Jim gets sold and the money is not split with the Duke. As long as Huck doesn’t blow, the Duke would tell him where to find Jim. And he was about to give him real information but he changes his mind and tells him to walk 40 miles in 3 days to a man named Abram Foster. Huck must go NOW.

Does a condiment belong in a magazine? Essay

A magazine aims to attract a certain type of reader or a reader with a certain interest. Garden and Gun Magazine is about southern culture; our food, our manners, our hospitality, our hobbies, our way of life in general. I do not recommend â€Å"The Guiltless Pleasure† for our magazine because it does not have the same purpose as the other food articles; Rick Braggs is misleading throughout the piece, and strays from the overall purpose of the article. When a reader turns to the food section of our magazine, they anticipate finding delicious recipes resembling those that southerners used to make and recipes that have been handed down through generations. Which is why â€Å"The Guiltless Pleasure† would be out of place if published in our magazine. In â€Å" The Guiltless Pleasure†, the closest thing to a recipe is instruction to add a dollop of mayonnaise to certain foods, like mashed potatoes, to make them taste better. Although Braggs does draw attention to the myth of all southerners liking mayonnaise, the article does not have enough information on how to incorporate this â€Å"southern condiment† into different foods. Braggs segregates people into two classifications, which are mayonnaise people and mustard people. He talks a great deal about mayonnaise people but talks about mustard people just as much and talks very highly of mustard people. â€Å"The Guiltless Pleasure† was misleading in my opinion because Braggs seems to talk negatively about both mayonnaise and mustard people but mentions some pretty positive things about mustard people despite his unconditional love of mayonnaise. According to Braggs, mustard people do things like wear a certain type of athletic clothing, eat well, and have overall better health than the rest of us. He compares mayonnaise people by making them seem lazy with comments like, â€Å"We like L.L. Bean catalogs, too, but only because they offer most of their clothes in XXL, and we like their running shoes, which we wear to Popeye’s, and the mailbox-if it is not too far.† He also mentions how mayonnaise people like to vacation in cities like New Orleans because of the local foods which are loaded down with calories. He makes mustard people seem genuinely happier and healthier than mayonnaise people despite the rest of his article that is trying to make mayonnaise seem like a condiment that makes everything taste tremendously better. This is misleading because if mayonnaise really is as wonderful as he makes it out to be, it wouldn’t be associated with a negative, unhealthy lifestyle. Not only should this article not be published in Garden and Gun Magazine because it is misleading, but because it strays from topic on numerous occasions. Although the stories in the article about Braggs â€Å"dictator wife†, the origins of mayonnaise, the mayonnaise isle description, and Elvis liking mayonnaise may be entertaining, they do not belong in Garden and Gun Magazine or in â€Å"The Guiltless Pleasure†. They distract from his main point, which seems to be that mayonnaise is absolutely amazing. Braggs tells stories about his wife limiting the amount of mayonnaise he uses, the type of mayonnaise he uses, but allows him to eat however much mustard he pleases. He mentions other things in his article that distract from this point too; for example the long, drawn out comparison of mustard people and mayonnaise people. If he had incorporated more information about foods mayonnaise improves or elaborated on the ones he did mention and left out the â€Å"fluff† the article would be a wonderful addition to our magazine. In order for this article to go well in Garden and Gun it would have to have more useful tips on using mayonnaise to make foods taste better and less stories that are not directly linked to the main point of mayonnaise being a wonderful condiment. As well as having more positive things about mayonnaise and the people who like it throughout the article. Despite the drawn-out comparison between mayonnaise and mustard people, the contradicting statements, and the off-topic stories I found this article very entertaining. I would recommend this article as it is for a magazine focused solely on entertainment or as a blog on the Internet.

Ethan Frome Essay Destiny can shape the lives of many different kinds of people, such as princes who are meant to be kings and the poor who know they will not have the opportunity to be wealthy. Ethan Frome taught me that it is human nature to follow the destiny and predetermined life patterns bestowed on us upon birth. In one of the earlier chapters of Ethan Frome, the author describes the gravestones of many Ethan Fromes before the main character. It shows that Ethan will live and die in Starkfield, and he cannot change that regardless of what his aspirations are. Humans seem to have picked a spot and stayed there. A girl who grows up in a small town in the Midwest in a school with a class of one hundred, will experience the same lifestyle but through the eyes of a grown up woman. Even though this girl might have had dreams of living her own lifestyle, the barriers her destiny have formed between her aspirations and the reality of her predestined future. Life seems to be similar to a computer for many, as it is for Ethan Frome. One can type in a course for someone to follow, and it seems to never run off the tracks. Having a predetermined life does not always have to be about where you come from geographically. Even looking around Morristown High School, you can see patterns where, sadly, certain students do not have the same opportunities for success as others because of their past. The child of a well known cardiologist who lives in The Summit is given the drive and determination to learn as a characteristic from their parents, and it is already programmed into their life course. The child of an immigrant who is doing as much as they can to get by, might not be able to find that drive and determination as easily within themselves as the child who has been given those qualities from birth. On the other hand, there are those who can break those barriers. Every once in a while, you hear about a success story of somebody who fell off the life course but eventually found their way to a new and improved one. Those people are far to scarce. I will never forget a billboard I once saw in New York that read â€Å"Homeless to Harvard. † The picture showed a girl who looked as normal as a next door neighbor, but her struggles and accomplishments brought her to an ivy league school. Ethan Frome, Zeena, and Mattie Silver fell unbeknownst into the course of life that Starkfield Massachusetts had made. Cold winters and relationships forced them to stay on a path to mental destruction and misery. The story taught me that it is human nature to follow the set of rules made by the surrounding society.
